Economic independence is one of the most important drivers of gender equality, and provides an important step towards women’s empowerment. Economic independence is critical to women’s ability to make choices for themselves, their careers and overall wellbeing. Here, some of the critical labour market indicators are presented, including average weekly earnings, the gender pay gap, and educational retention rates, as well as labour force participation rates, unemployment and underemployment rates. Further indicators of economic independence such as superannuation and unpaid work are included in the report.
